‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals’ is currently gracing the stage at Javeenbah Theatre Company. The story follows everyman Paul Matthews, an anti-musical man who becomes stuck in a world of singing and dancing when a musical outbreak spreads across the town.
I got to sit down with the show’s director and musical theatre fan, Fiona Mumford and discuss that it’s like directing her first show, and what about ‘The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals’ drew her to pick it.
“I wanted to direct a StarKid’s show,” she said. “It’s a cute ten-piece ensemble, everyone’s got something to do, and its just a really fun little story, like it’s silly […] and it takes the piss of itself.”
Audiences will join Paul on his adventure to escape the infected musical zombies and stop the spread of the infection, before it’s too late.
Or is it already too late?
Fiona stated that of all the characters in the musical, the one she identifies with the most is General MacNamara, the Army General, who, at Javeenbah, is played by a woman.
“She’s just got so much power, and like, it’s not in a scary way, it’s in a respectful way. She just holds so much authority and power and you just can’t take your eyes off her.”
In addition to General MacNamara, the character of Ted is also a highlight for Fiona.
“He gets all the best funny lines, but every time he comes on stage, he comes out and he puts his arm up on the wall in like a sleazy, like he’s hitting on everyone, and every time he comes out he does that and it makes me giggle every time. […] Like even though I know he’s gonna do it, it still makes me giggle.”
What can you expect when you go see this musical, you might be wondering? Other than the hilariously sleazy Ted, the powerful General MacNamara, and lots of singing and dancing?
“They can expect a lot of fun, a lot of adult content, but done in a fun way […and] it’ll be a nice little message that they get at the end. It’s a fun night out. Have a good laugh, see some really talented singers and dances and musicians.”
What a fantastic way to spend a Friday or Saturday night, and what a show to kick off her directing debut! A fun little horror comedy about a guy who hates musicals but is stuck in one. What’s more ironic that?
