Organizing and presenting theatrical shows that cater to the local community is the essence of local theatre production. It's also an excellent opportunity to workshop, rehearse, and showcase work created by emerging writers.
This provides them with a platform to develop their craft, receive feedback, and expand their reach to a wider audience and Spotlight Theatre Company is getting ready to showcase a mystery written by a Gold Coast local, in less than two weeks!
We reached out to local writer James Hall to tell us a little about himself and his what drove him to write EXIT.
Here is what he had to say:
“EXIT has been whirring around in my head for a number of years and to finally see it come to life through director Clem Halpin’s vision, as well as through our actors’ supreme talent, is simply a dream come true. I can’t thank Spotlight Theatrical Company enough for their commitment to the play.
With two daughters who have been through Spotlight Youth Theatre, it constantly resonated with me how wonderful it would be to have a play I’ve written be performed in the Basement Theatre and directed by Clem.
Writing allows me to engage my inner most thoughts, fears and loves with an audience. The desire to create has always driven me, and playwriting, as well as music, are very natural ways to satiate this need.
I’ve always been drawn to confronting, complex story worlds and themes and I’ve attempted to portray this in EXIT by fleshing out such arresting ideas onto the page and into audiences’ minds. There’s also a certain writer’s delight associated with untangling the web each role has unwittingly weaved.
I began with the thought of having a central character isolated from the world (a remote cabin in the Victorian High Country seemed the perfect scene), alone and lost within himself, then peel back the layers for us all to discover his exposed soul’s true worth.
It’s an incredible privilege to have a Spotlight audience join the journey of EXIT’s three characters within a story I’ve always wanted to tell.”
Exit is an original Australian psychological thriller set in a remote snow cabin in the Victorian High Country. Harvey, an uninvited local hunter, coaxes Justin, a musician on the verge of breakdown, to reveal the past that haunts him. However, Harvey’s ulterior motives slowly come to the surface, leading to a dramatic confrontation.
